This Christmas season has meant a lot more to me than the usual bells, whistles, and the occasional candy cane. It's Craig and I's first Christmas as husband & wife. One of the new ladies at my job found this out and she Ooohed and Awwed. It was nice to tell the story of how Craig and I met, tales from our dating time, and our hopes for the future. Then she proceeded to ask me if I was doing anything new this holiday season because we were married. I went on to describe our traditions and when it was her turn her Christmas' married life holiday traditions lit a light bulb over my head of something I so need to start doing this year!
My co-worker and her husband collect Christmas ornaments from all the special times they've had in their married life. Two special ornaments from China where they adopted their two sons, ornaments from their tropical getaways, other ornaments from their special road trips, and a new ornament for each year to remember the little moments. Her tale left me smitten and eager to start my own collection.

I have a few ornaments near and dear to my heart but mostly I have some random ones I got as filler. There is the breast cancer angel ornament one of my best friend's mom made me, a few Nightmare before Christmas scene balls which were limited edition, a sassy Roger Rabbit & Jessica Rabbit one, a ceramic home with 2010 etched in for when I bought my condo, and this year I have a wedding cake ornament for our first year...The possibilities to add to this miscellaneous assortment is endless! This year we still have our small little tree but I know some time in the future we will have the big epic tree and how lovely would it be to have the ornaments tell the story of us.
Personally I don't collect many certain types of things. Don't get me wrong, I'm definitely a pack rat, . I used to collect Victorian figurines, still do, although finding ones lately is difficult. I also accidentally started collecting washi tapes. Once I had three big photo boxes full I realized I had a bit of a problem. lol. I still add a unique washi tape to the almost full third box once in a while. I started collecting old records a few years ago too, but like the Victorian figurines, the vinyls I like are hard to come by. It's a process...
I'm promise not to abandon these prior treasure hunts of mine, just shift the focus to something I know I can find anywhere. My husband isn't much of a collector, he's a minimalist, but I'm sure I can twist his arm on this one. Something about collecting ornaments feels right and it's a wonderful goal to strive for! =)
Do you Collect Christmas Ornaments? or
Do You Collect Something Else?
I'd love to hear...

We have tons of ornaments! My mom gave me a bunch of my special ones from when I was a baby/kid, and I also have a lot of my grandmother's and great-grandmother's- some are almost 100 years old! I love looking at the ornaments when we put them up every year and remembering where we got them or who gave them to us.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy this magical season! Our first married Christmas was my favorite!
ReplyDeleteMy pastor's wife told me that everyone should collect something. She said that some people like to give gifts to show their affection. You should make it easy on them by having something small to collect that they can pick up if they are thinking of being a blessing to you. As for me, I collect napkin rings ;)
ReplyDeleteHappy first married Christmas! It's my husband and I's first married Christmas also and it has been wonderful as well. We are going to collect ornaments each year as well. I love looking back on the memories that each ornament holds.
ReplyDeleteI am a firm believer that Christmas trees should be filled with ornaments reflecting special things and times in peoples lives. Other than that I'm not much of a collector. My mom collected Santa Clauses and she has so many that it's more of a pain to pull them out at Christmas than anything else. I'm like your husband and think less is best. Less to clean and dust and I don't have to worry about where to put things when a collection grows too big.
ReplyDeleteCollecting special ornaments sounds like such a fantastic idea. I should start doing that too:) Happy 1st married Christmas to you guys:)
ReplyDeleteI collect ornaments! I have at least one dated ornament from every year of my life. My mom has been getting them for me since I was born. She does the same for my daughter and husband now. It's such a fun tradition.
ReplyDeleteWe try to buy one new special ornament each year. My favorite one though is the ornament we bought together on our honeymoon. We traveled the Oregon Coast and bought an ornament there that has our wedding date on it and is filled with sand. I love seeing it every time we decorate the tree. Anyways congrats on the first year! It's somethin' else ain't it?
ReplyDeleteCollecting Victorian figurines sounds awesome! I'd love to do that :D It's our first Christmas time in our flat and I've picked our bauble for this year, hopefully we can collect one every year too! Love your blog! :D xx

This is lovely. Yes, we collect ornaments. We get a new one every year (sometimes more). When we travel, we like to get an ornament from the place we visited.
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing (and for linking up to the #SHINEbloghop).
Wishing you a lovely evening.

I love the idea of collecting ornaments and have for years. My husband and I now do it for our three daughters so when they move out someday and have their first tree they will have a collection of ornaments full of sentimental value.
